Dantewada Block, Dakshin Bastar Dantewada district, Chhattisgarh
Dantewada block is one of the 7 blocks of Dakshin Bastar Kanker district in South Chhattisgarh. It is one of the intensive blocks selected under the High Impact Mega Watershed project which is a joint effort by the Government of Chhattisgarh and the CSOs to improve the income of rural families through water conservation and management.
The block headquarters of Dantewada block is located at district headquarters at Dantewada.
The block consists of 59 Villages, 33 Gram Panchayats and out of these 22 are under the project. It is spread across an area of 822 Sq Km.
As per SECC 2011, demographic data 81.43 % households belong to Schedule Tribes and 18.9 % households are women headed.
In Dantewda, out of total 13,798 households 12,329 households have been considered under inclusion category and 12,289 are under the deprivation households.10,450 households are under SC/ST deprivation criterion.
Further 18.6 % of households do not have any land for cultivation and of the total land 83.66 % of is unirrigated. Census also shows that 94.74 % of the households have income less than Rs.5000 which depicts the status of widespread poverty in the region.
About the CSO in Dantewada
In Dantewada, Shamayita Math is the Civil Society Organisation implementing the project. Shamayita Math’s team has been engaging with community members specially women in this region and has been active in formation of community-based organisations. The key themes in which organisation are involved are agriculture and farm-based livelihood strengthening, promoting non-farm livelihoods such as Poultry and livestock and planning and implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
Shamayita Math team has been actively involved in community mobilisation, providing training to various stakeholders on watershed principles and ensuring that plans are made on a participatory basis. They are also involved with MGNREGA block and district functionaries to ensure that plans get sanctioned and are implemented in a quality way.

The topography map, commonly known as TOPO SHEET, is produced by department of Survey of India and provides accurate graphic information about features of earth. It projects the elevation of various geographical features which help in assessing the slope and the elevation of the land. It is the only map which shows the contour lines and most of the manmade and natural assets on the earth surface, like waterbodies, streams, forest, sea, roads, bridges, railways, habitations, hospitals, electric lines etc.
They help in watershed boundary delineation and in analysis of water flow movement within the Gram Panchayat boundaries. It also helps in planning of watershed interventions, larger structures, canal, and roads network etc.
MWS Boundary
Watershed is a hydrological unit bounded by natural ridges and allows the run-off due to rainfall to drain in a well-defined drainage pattern of streams flowing within the watershed’s boundary towards a common outlet. Based on the size, the hydrological unit is termed as water resource region, basin, catchment, sub-catchment, watershed, sub-watershed and micro-watershed respectively. The smallest hydrologic unit in the hierarchal system is termed as Micro watershed having size of 500-1000 ha.
Watershed delineation is a part of the process of watershed segmentation, i.e., dividing the watershed into discrete land and channel segments to analyze watershed behavior. The micro and macro watershed boundaries are developed by “All India Soil & Land Use Survey organization” (AISLUSO, GoI)
Watershed boundary is delineated using these maps which helps in ridge to valley planning. Micro Watershed Maps help in understanding macro and micro watersheds existing in planning areas along the topographic contour lines
Drainage Map
Drainage maps help in determining drainage patterns and drainage density of the watershed. Drainage pattern is the pattern formed by the streams, rivers and lakes in a particular drainage basin. It provides information about stream orders and probable quantum of surface run off from the watershed. Drainage map is the base map for any watershed as the area and boundaries of watershed are derived with help of drainage map.
This is used in understanding the features of watershed for scoping and planning of Drainage line treatment works. By superimposing different thematic maps over drainage map we can identify the most suitable locations for drainage line treatment interventions – i.e. in first order stream gully plug, brush wood check dam can be constructed and second order stream boulder check dam, gabion etc., depending on other parameters such as slope, catchment area, potential discharge, velocity of water, availability of construction materials and topography of nala.
Hillshading technique is used to create a realistic view of terrain by creating a three-dimensional surface from a two-dimensional display of it.
Forest MWS
Forest maps include Remote Sensing based forest cover assessment in a periodic manner by forest department and helps in knowing about existing forest cover. A seamless vegetation map (scale 1: 50,000) prepared using medium-resolution satellite images is presented. The map was created using an on-screen visual interpretation technique and has an accuracy of 90 %. The forest map is prepared using satellite remote sensing data, validated with Bhuvan field samples and information relating to the biogeography, climate, and soil.
Forest maps give clarity on forest patches, which are present so that planning can be done accordingly.
LULC
Land use maps refers to various purposes for lands are utilized eg. for agriculture, waterbodies, forestry, waste land, habitations, etc. over a period. LULC maps helps in understanding present land status and its utilization, whereas land cover gives an idea of the present biophysical cover on it i.e. forest, crop, degraded forest, township, roads etc.
Land use and Land cover of the watershed area are very important features for determining surface run off, ground water recharging potential and rate of soil erosion and very much helpful in identifying possible interventions for effective area treatment. Land use/land cover (LULC) change is crucial for guiding land resource management and planning sustainable development.
Erosion
Erosion map refers to the map showing details of erosion in the focused area and gives an idea of severity and type of erosion. It shows different types of erosion, like sheet erosion, gulley erosion, rill erosion, stabilized dunes, Ravines etc.
It is crucial for planning of area and drainage line treatment activities for soil and water conservation in the target area. Mostly it is used by superimposing with LULC and drainage map to locate the severity and type of land use land cover for deciding the type of interventions.
Lineament
Lineaments are straight or approximately linear landforms that are widely distributed across the surface of the Earth and are closely related to underground concealed faults. Lineaments are related to fractures and faults in the strata and most of the streams run along the present lineaments. It also depicts distribution of rocks, bedding planes, folds, faults present in that area. The ground water conditions are determined by lithology of the land.They are important for making decisions related to ground water recharging structures like Gabions, percolation tank, underground dikes, recharge pit etc.
Bhujal Map
Ground water prospectus map refers to the map showing status of groundwater and the possible yield in litre per minute (lpm) through different colour coding, in the focused area and gives an idea of recharge potential in the area. For example, green and blue colour indicates good recharge potential and yellow and red shows poor to no recharge zones. Waterbodies and perineal streams also indicated by blue colour.
It is especially important for planning and drainage line treatment activities for ground water recharge interventions in the target area. It is used by superimposing of LULC and drainage map for locating the possible site and type of interventions.
Geomorphology
Geomorphology deals with landforms, and a detailed map results in better understanding of the erosion process and hazards. This kind of information, together with rock types and structures leads to proper selection of sites for various watershed structures as well as in estimation of peak flows and timing.
These maps are available with Bhuvan (1: 50,000 scale) and provides important details for determining the interventions in a location.
Wasteland
Ministry of food and Agriculture govt. of India (1961) has defined wastelands as those lands which are either not available for cultivation or left out from cultivation for some reason or the other.
This map easily identified forest degraded area for gap area filling afforestation works.
Existing Structures
The geo-tagging of assets created over past years provide important information about the existing structures and it helps us in determining and assessing the relevance of planned interventions in a location. The GEO-MGNREGA datasets were used for generating this thematic map.
The existing water bodies map is generated through information derived from geo-tagged asset records as well as field mapping with the help of GPS co-ordinates. This map gives a clear idea about types of water conservation and harvesting measures required keeping in mind the currently available water harvesting capacities.
Action Plan
Activity Map is generated post the planning process and is generated through geo-tagging of proposed work sites. It is the final map depicting the proposed suitable structures in the sites. It helps in analysing the planning done and in documenting all the interventions and structures planned. The expected outcomes can also be recorded more objectively with the help of this thematic map.

स्थलाकृति मानचित्र, जिसे आमतौर पर TOPO SHEET के रूप में जाना जाता है, भारत के सर्वेक्षण विभाग द्वारा निर्मित किया जाता है और भूमि की भौगोलिक स्थिति के बारे में सटीक जानकारी प्रदान करता हैl यह उस क्षेत्र की विभिन्न भौगोलिक विशेषताओं के बारे में भी बताता है , जो भूमि की समुद्रतल से उंचाई और ढलान के आकलन में मदद करता है।
यह एकमात्र मानचित्र है जो समोच्च रेखाओं (contour lines) को प्रदर्शित करता है, साथ पृथ्वी की सतह पर स्थित मानव निर्मित और प्राकृतिक परिसंपत्तियों को दिखाता है, जैसे तालाब, जलधाराएं, जंगल, समुद्र, सड़क, पुल, रेलवे, बस्तियां, अस्पताल, विद्युत लाइनें आदि।
इस नक़्शे की सहायता से जलग्रहण क्षेत्र की सीमा के निर्धारण, चित्रण और ग्राम पंचायत के भीतर जल प्रवाह की मात्रा एवं तीव्रता का विश्लेषण किया जा सकता हैं। यह वाटरशेड क्षेत्र में बनने वाली जल एवं मृदा सरक्षण संरचनाओं और अन्य बड़ी संरचनाओं जैसे बड़े तालाब, नहर और सड़कों के नेटवर्क आदि की योजना बनाने में भी मदद करता है।
माइक्रो जलग्रहण सीमाजलग्रहण क्षेत्र उस हाइड्रोलॉजिकल इकाई को कहा जाता है जो प्राकृतिक टीलों (रिज लाइन) से घिरी होती है और उस क्षेत्र पर गिरने वाला बारिश का समस्त पानी एक ही आउटलेट से निकलता है।
क्षेत्रफल के आधार पर हाइड्रोलॉजिकल इकाई को क्रमशः जल संसाधन प्रक्षेत्र (रीजन), बेसिन, जलग्रहण, उप-जलग्रहण, जलग्रहण क्षेत्र, सब केचमेंट और माइक्रो-वाटरशेड कहा जाता है। सबसे छोटी इकाई को माइक्रो वाटरशेड कहा जाता है जिसका आकार लगभग 500-1000 हेक्टेयर के मध्य होता है। वाटरशेड सीमांकन, वाटरशेड को निचले स्तर तक विभाजन की प्रक्रिया का एक हिस्सा है अर्थात् वाटरशेड को क्षेत्रफल और जलधारा की स्थिति के अनुसार विभाजित करके जलग्रहण क्षेत्र के अध्ययन का एक तरीका है l माइक्रो और मेक्रो जलग्रहण सीमाएँ “अखिल भारतीय मृदा और भू-उपयोग सर्वेक्षण संगठन” (All India Soil & Land Use Survey organization (AISLUSO, GoI) द्वारा विकसित की जाती हैं।
जलग्रहण उपचार के लिए चोटी से घाटी के आधार पर, योजना बनाने में मदद लेने के लिए, जलग्रहण सीमायों को इन मानचित्रों का उपयोग करते हुए चित्रित किया गया है। माइक्रो वाटरशेड मैप्स, समोच्च लाइनों (topographic contour lines) के साथ योजना क्षेत्रों में मौजूद मैक्रो और माइक्रो वाटरशेड को समझने में मदद करते हैं।
हिलशेड के साथ ड्रेनेजड्रेनेज मैप्स ड्रेनेज पैटर्न और जलग्रहण क्षेत्र के जल निकास रेखा के घनत्व को निर्धारित करने में मदद करते हैं। ड्रेनेज पैटर्न एक जलग्रहण क्षेत्र में स्थित जल निकास रेखाओं, नदियों और झीलों की संख्या एवं स्थिति को प्रदर्शित करता है l
यह नक्शा जलग्रहण क्षेत्र में सतही प्रवाह की संभावित मात्रा और प्रवाह की गति की जानकारी भी देता है l ड्रेनेज मैप जलग्रहण विकास के लिए सबसे महत्वपूर्ण मुख्य मैप होता है क्योंकि जलग्रहण क्षेत्र और सीमाएं ड्रेनेज मैप की मदद से ही बनायी जाती हैं।
इसका उपयोग जलग्रहण क्षेत्र को समझने और कार्य योजना बनाने में किया जाता है। जल निकासी मानचित्र के ऊपर विभिन्न मानचित्रों को रखकर (superimposing), जल एवं मृदा संरक्षण संरचनाएं बनाने के लिए सबसे उपयुक्त स्थल के चयन में मदद करता है – जैसे कि प्रथम स्तर की धारा में गली प्लग , ब्रश वुड चेक डैम, दूसरे स्तर की धाराओं में बोल्डर चेक डैम, गैबियन आदि, अन्य मापदंडों जैसे क्षेत्र का ढलान, जलग्रहण क्षेत्र, संभावित, पानी की गति, मिटटी के कटाव की स्थिति, निर्माण सामग्री की उपलब्धता और नाले की भौगोलिक स्थिति आदि को ध्यान में रखते हुए बनाये जाते हैं l
हिलशेडिंग तकनीक का उपयोग सतह के 2-dimensional और 3 -dimensional दृश्य बनाने के लिए किया जाता है।
वन नक्शावन मानचित्र वन विभाग द्वारा नियमित अंतराल में रिमोट सेंसिंग तकनीक से बनाये जाते हैं और मौजूदा वन आवरण की स्थिति के बारे में जानने में मदद करता है। वनस्पति आवरण मानचित्र (1 : 50000) के स्केल में बनाया जाता है l
मानचित्र को ऑन-स्क्रीन दृश्य व्याख्या तकनीक का उपयोग करके बनाया गया था और इसकी सटीकता 90% है। जंगल का नक्शा उपग्रह रिमोट सेंसिंग डेटा का उपयोग करके तैयार किया गया है, जिसे भुवन के द्वारा संगृहीत क्षेत्रिय नमूनों और बायोग्राफी, जलवायु और मिट्टी से संबंधित जानकारी के साथ सत्यापित किया जाता है।
वन मानचित्र, वनों की वास्तविक, वर्तमान स्थिति की जानकारी देते हैं, ताकि तदानुसार योजना बनायीं जा सके।
भूमि उपयोग और भूमि आवरणभूमि उपयोग मानचित्र भूमि के विभिन्न उपयोगों, जैसे कृषि, तालाब, झील, वानिकी, बंजर भूमि, बस्तियों आदि को दर्शाता है । यह नक्शे वर्तमान भूमि की स्थिति और इसके उपयोग को समझने में मदद करते हैं जबकि भूमि आवरण नक्शा वर्तमान में भूमि की सतह पर स्थित भौतिक संरचनाओं को दर्शाता है जैसे की वन क्षेत्र , फसल, अपघटित या उजड़े हुए वन क्षेत्र, आबादी आदि।
जलग्रहण क्षेत्र का भूमि उपयोग और भूमि आवरण मानचित्र भूजल के पुनर्भरण की क्षमता और मिट्टी के कटाव की दर को निर्धारित करने और उपचार के लिए संभावित संरचनाओं की प्लानिंग में बहुत सहायक होते हैं l
स्थायी विकास की योजना बनाने के लिए भूमि संसाधन प्रबंधन और भूमि उपयोग / भूमि कवर (LULC) में अपेक्षित परिवर्तन अति महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दे हैं ।
कटाव मानचित्रमृदा क्षरण मानचित्र, विशेष क्षेत्र में मिटटी के कटाव का विवरण दिखाने वाले नक्शे को संदर्भित करता हैl इस मानचित्र के द्वारा कटाव की गंभीरता और प्रकार के बारे में जानकारी मिलती है l यह विभिन्न प्रकार के मिटटी के कटाव को दर्शाता है, जैसे कि सतही कटाव (sheet erosion), नाली के रूप में कटाव (gully erosion), रिल क्षरण (rill erosion) आदि l
यह मिट्टी और जल संरक्षण क्षेत्र के उपचार और जल निकासी लाइन उपचार के लियी प्रस्तावित गतिविधियों की योजना बनाने के लिए महत्वपूर्ण सहायता प्रदान करता है। अधिकतर इसका उपयोग LULC और ड्रेनेज मैप के साथ सुपरइम्पोज़िंग द्वारा किया जाता है ताकि भूमि उपयोग और कटाव की गंभीरता के अनुसार प्लान बनाया जा सके l
लीनियामेंट नक्शालीनियामेंट/ रेखांकन सीधी या लगभग सीधी भू-आकृतियाँ हैं जो व्यापक रूप से पृथ्वी की सतह पर वितरित होती हैं और भूमि के अन्दर के दरारों और चट्टानों के जोड़ को प्रदर्शित करती है l अधिकांश जल धाराएँ/ नदी नाले इन रेखाओं के साथ ही चलते हैं।
इस मानचित्र में उस क्षेत्र में मौजूद चट्टानें, सिलवटों को भी दर्शाया गया है। जलग्रहण क्षेत्र में भूजल की स्थिति भूमि के नीचे पत्थरों के प्रकार (Lithology Structures) द्वारा निर्धारित की जाती है।
यह रेखाएं भूजल पुनर्भरण संरचनाओं जैसे गेबियन, परकोलेशन टैंक, भूमिगत डाइक, रिचार्ज पिट आदि से संबंधित निर्णय लेने के लिए महत्वपूर्ण सहायता प्रदान करती हैं l
भूजल प्रास्पेक्टसभूजल प्रास्पेक्टस मानचित्र, भूजल की स्थिति और भूजल की लीटर प्रति मिनट (LPM) में संभावित उत्पादकता को अलग-अलग रंग कोडिंग के माध्यम से दर्शाता है और जलग्रहण क्षेत्र में भूजल पुनर्भरण क्षमता के विषय में जानकारी देता है। उदाहरण के लिए, हरा और नीला रंग अच्छी रीचार्ज क्षमता, पीला रंग कम रीचार्ज क्षमता और लाल रंग अपारगम्य या बिना रिचार्ज वाले ज़ोन को दर्शाता है । वॉटरबॉडी और बारहमासी धाराएं भी नीले रंग से प्रदर्शित होती हैं।
यह कार्य क्षेत्र में भूजल पुनर्भण्डारण की योजना और जल निकासी रेखा उपचार की गतिविधियों के लिए विशेष रूप से महत्वपूर्ण है। इसका उपयोग LULC के साथ सुपरइम्पोज़िंग द्वारा संभावित संरचनाओं के प्रकार तय करने और स्थल चयन करने के लिए किया जाता हैl
जिओमोर्फोलोजी नक्शाजिओमोर्फोलोजी विज्ञान भू-आकृतियों से संबंधित है इसके विस्तृत नक्शे के अध्ययन से क्षरण प्रक्रिया, उसके प्रभाव और खतरों की बेहतर समझ बनाने में सहायता मिलती है l इस जानकारी और पत्थरों के प्रकार की जानकारी जलसंरक्षण संरचनाओं बनाने के लिए उचित जगह के चुनाव में मदद करती है l इसके साथ ही अत्याधिक बहाव और समय के आंकलन में भी मदद करता है जिससे साइटों का उचित चयन होता है।
ये नक्शे भुवन (1: 50,000 स्केल) के साथ उपलब्ध हैं और किसी स्थान में कार्य के निर्धारण के लिए महत्वपूर्ण विवरण प्रदान करते हैं।
बंजर भूमिखाद्य और कृषि मंत्रालय भारत (1961) ने बंजर भूमि को उन जमीनों के रूप में परिभाषित किया है जो या तो खेती के लिए उपलब्ध नहीं हैं या किसी कारण से उन पर खेती नहीं की जा रही हैं।
इस नक्शे से आसानी से बंजर क्षेत्रों को पहचाना जा सकता है जहाँ वृक्षारोपण या अन्य गतिविधियाँ जैसे सार्वजनिक तालाब निर्माण, चारागाह विकाश आदि की संभावना होती है l
मौजूदा जल संरक्षणपिछले वर्षों में मनरेगा के अंतर्गत बनाई गई परिसंपत्तियों की जियो-टैगिंग मौजूदा संरचनाओं के बारे में महत्वपूर्ण जानकारी प्रदान करती है और यह हमें किसी स्थान में नियोजित संरचनाओं की प्रासंगिकता का निर्धारण और आकलन करने में मदद करती है। इस विषयगत मानचित्र को बनाने के लिए GEO-MGNREGA डेटासेट का उपयोग किया गया था।
मौजूदा जल निकायों का नक्शा (Water bodies map), geo- tagged परिसंपत्ति और उनके वास्तविक GPS coordinates की सहायता से तयार किया जाता है। यह मानचित्र वर्तमान में उपलब्ध जल संचयन क्षमता को ध्यान में रखते हुए आवश्यक जल संरक्षण और जल संचयन के उपायों की योजना बनाने में सहायक होता है।
गतिविधि नक्शागतिविधि मानचित्र नियोजन प्रक्रिया और प्रस्तावित कार्य स्थलों की geo-tagging से बनाया जाता है। यह कार्य योजना में प्रस्तावित संरचनाओं का चित्रण करने वाला मानचित्र है।
यह कार्य योजना में प्रस्तावित संरचनाओं के विश्लेषण और दस्तावेजीकरण में मदद करता है। इस नक़्शे के मदद से कार्य योजना के अपेक्षित लाभों एवं लाभान्वित क्षेत्रों का सटीक आकलन किया जाता हैl

Chhattisgarh Mega Watershed Project is a joint initiative of the Govt. of Chhattisgarh, Bharat Rural Livelihoods Foundation and Axis Bank Foundation. This four-year project aspires to enhance the income of 100,000 small and marginal farmers on a sustainable basis, more than 40 percent of whom belong to the Scheduled Tribes through a consortium of 13 CSOs
