Narharpur Block, Kanker District, Chhattisgarh 

Narharpur block is one of the 7 blocks of North Bastar Kanker district in south Chhattisgarh. It is one of the intensive blocks selected under the High Impact Mega Watershed project which is a joint effort by the Government of Chhattisgarh and the CSOs to improve the income of rural families through water conservation and management.

The block headquarters of Narharpur is located 40 Km from district headquarters at Kanker. The block consists of 118 villages and 66 Gram Panchayats, and out of these 45 are under the project. It is spread across an area of 897 Sq Km.

As per SECC 2011, demographic data indicates that 96.02% of households are rural with 66.5 % belonging to Schedule Tribes and 18.19% households are women headed. The data also says 91% of families have a monthly income of less than Rs. 5000. In Narharpur, out of total 23655 households 19806 households have been considered under inclusion category and 19760 are under the deprivation households.14134 households are under SC/ST deprivation criterion.

Further 26.10% of households do not have any land for cultivation and of the total land 86.1% of is unirrigated. Census also shows that 91.56% of the households have income less than Rs.5000 which depicts the status of widespread poverty in the region.

Kanker district is also one of the Aspirational districts selected by NITI Aayog.


About the CSO in Narharpur in the project 

In Narharpur, Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN) is the Civil Society Organisation implementing the project. PRADAN Narharpur team has been engaging with community members specially women in this region and has been active in formation and nurturing of women self-help groups and community-based organisations. The key themes in which organisation are involved are agriculture and farm-based livelihood strengthening, promoting non-farm livelihoods such as Poultry and livestock and planning and implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.

PRADAN team has been actively involved in community mobilisation, providing training to various stakeholders on watershed principles and ensuring that plans are made on a participatory basis. They are also involved with MGNREGA block and district functionaries to ensure that plans get sanctioned and are implemented in a quality way.

About Us

Chhattisgarh Mega Watershed Project is a joint initiative of the Govt. of Chhattisgarh, Bharat Rural Livelihoods Foundation and Axis Bank Foundation. This four-year project aspires to enhance the income of 100,000 small and marginal farmers on a sustainable basis, more than 40 percent of whom belong to the Scheduled Tribes through a consortium of 13 CSOs
